Central Surveillance Hub - “Center”

Central Surveillance Hub - “Center”

The Penitentiary’s Central Surveillance Hub, or “Center” as it was known to the guards, is the physical and symbolic center the prison. This distinctive architectural feature--designed for surveillance into the radiating cellblocks--was copied in hundreds of prisons during the 19th century, and provides one of the most powerful visitor experiences today. The seven original cellblocks and the South Corridor, can be seen through the eight arched doors around the room.
Since this photograph was taken, the plaster ceiling has been removed.
