"Wherever you go, there you are."
Peripheral vision is where we perceive motion and space, the corner of our eyes - the subconscious of our visual perception. It's where we receive our sense of place and form our emotional read of space. For many years it has fascinated me (thus my collection of wide angle film cameras from Russia and Japan). The image shown behind them was shot in 1998 at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Built in 1829, it revolutionized the prison system, introducing the concepts of penitence and reform. The series of 32 panoramas was shot on film with a 17mm lens, and stitched together from 12 separate images, creating a full 360 degree view of the space and giving viewers otherwise unable to visit the space a sense of being there.
